I moved to Manteno UMC in July 2022, returning to Illinois Great Rivers after 20 years in extension ministries. Most recently, I served as a missionary for 2 years in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Before that I was a Wesley Foundation director and campus pastor at Purdue University for 18 years and part-time associate pastor at First UMC in West Lafayette IN for 14 of those years. I started my ministry at Hindsboro, Mt. Gilead, Windsor, and Zion Hill UMCs. I graduated from University of Illinois in history, Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis with an M.Div. and Master of Theological Studies. Before I headed to Africa, I was working on my doctorate in history at Purdue and hope to finish it someday.
I have two grown children. Isaiah recently graduated from George Washington University in international development. Ella is a student at Purdue University in elementary education. My parents live in Mahomet and my grandma in Tuscola.
I want to get to know you at a deeper level! I am available to meet for coffee, food, a walk, or pastoral care by appointment.
Favorite hymn/s: “Hymn of Promise” and “This is Our Song,” unless it’s Easter or Christmas. Then they are “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” and “Angels We Have Heard on High.”
Favorite praise song/s: “Oceans,” “Give Me Your Eyes,” and “If We Are the Body.”
Hobbies: I love to go out in nature—bicycling, hiking, kayaking or canoeing, taking pictures, gardening, swimming, etc. I love reading and studying!
How I prepare sermons: Sometimes I will do a short series on a theme. However, I usually follow the Revised Common Lectionary, which covers much of the Bible in a three-year cycle. It includes readings from the Torah (first five books), the Psalms, Prophets, the Gospels, and the Epistles (letters). I love the Wesley Quadrilateral – I study the scriptures, study the historical context and translations, and consider what these have to say to us in light or reason and experience today. I take the scripture very seriously (not literally) and try to be authentic and honest about how I interpret and apply them. I don’t avoid tough and controversial topics, and like anybody, I have opinions. I do not expect you to agree with me. If my opinions ever offend you, or confuse you, please come talk to me about it. I love discussing theology, the Bible, history, culture, and I look forward to hearing your opinions.
